Warren County: Open Thread

A preliminary report on the Warren County recount has been posted at www.VoteCobb.org. This report is not yet final, as more information is still coming in from all 88 Ohio counties. We invite you to read it and to share your experiences and comments related to the Warren County recount.

Have you noticed that the precincts selected for recounting were 17 votes short of 3%. (Noted first on democratic underground). The 3.8% figure cited in the report is obtained by dividing the total number of votes cast by the toal number of registered voters in the selected counties. If you divide votes cast in the selected precincts by total votes cast in the county, you get: 2.98%. If you divide registered voters in the selected precincts by registered voters in the in the county, you get 2.87%.

Here's a link to my original report of what may be an error in the Warren County recount.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=203x192398

Did the recount REALLY reconcile with the 3602 figure as stated in the Cobb recount report?

If so, then someone needs to re-check the numbers....

I know that you are all busy and that there's more than enough work to go around, but it sure would be great if someone on the recount team would either respond to this item, or tell me to go away and put my efforts elsewhere.

Late Breaking News from a Green Party observer: I have been advised by Sharon Fisher, Asst Director of the Warren County BoE, that the director was given a ruling by the prosecutor's office that we can have access to the additional documents we requested!! Due to the holiday and vacation schedule of the BoE staffers and Board members, they have advised us that most likely this will take place in the first week of January. This is a bit of a let-down, but the good news is that it will give us time take whatever action we think appropriate and necessary on whatever has already happen, and to regroup to be thoroughly prepared for the next step. As soon as I am made aware of the dates and times, I will let everyone know. I hope you will still be interested in helping on those dates we're able to do this work.

Please feel free to offer comments, suggestions, etc. as you see fit.
Thanks so much for you interest, commitment, and tenacity! BG

Dear HG,

I apologize that you did not hear from anyone. We are an all-volunteer operation and are currently struggling to keep up with the avalanche of reports coming in. Right now our priority is to get the county reports up, so, unfortunately, no one is available to monitor the blog postings and comments at this time.

I have asked the recount coordinator for Warren County to respond to you. Let me know if you don't hear from her. Keep in mind that a lot of our observers and coordinators are currently on the road, participating in protests in Ohio and D.C.

You do point out a problem that must be addressed. We created the blog as a way for voters to organize, talk to each other, share their experiences and ideas, and get the truth out. As you can see, it has over 88 threads, and it is a lot to monitor -- especially without staff available to do just that.

Would you like to help us?

If you have time, would you like to keep an eye on the blog threads and alert us to items that require an immediate response? Maybe you have other ideas about how the Recount Blog could better serve the public. We welcome your involvment.

Please accept my apologies that your good ideas seemed to be unnoticed at first. It is simply because we are having trouble keeping up with the volume of work -- NOT because we don't appreciate your efforts.

Thanks very much for your input, and please volunteer to monitor the blog, if you can. If you have experienced this problem, probably others have, as well, so we need to address it. We want to encouage thoughtful people like yourself to continue your engagement with the recount report data.

On Dec 25th I posted a note above showing what I believed was a strange anomaly in the Warren County Recount Report.

After some dilligent effort by lizzieforKerry from Democratic Underground, who I believe, actually contacted the recounters themselves, I realize that I made a significant error in my original post.

It turns out that there are TWO precincts in Warren County, named almost identically with, would you believe, the identical number of registered voters? 789

Deerfield Township West and
Deerfield Township West A.

Their Codes are DEF T W ACK and DEF T WA AFT respectively.

When I read the original recount report, and tried to match it up with the Warren County Canvass Report, I searched through the Canvass Report based on the number of registered voters. When my search revealed DEF T W ACK, without having an understanding of Warren County's unique coding system, I erroneously thought that that was the precinct in question, and used it's actual vote count (626) instead of the correct vote count which was (650).

As a result of my error, one of my conclusions (that the recount was less than 3% of the ballots cast) was incorrect. In fact, the recount was based on 2872 ballot out of 95512 cast or 3.00695%, amazingly close for a random sampling, but over the 3% threshhold nonetheless.

I am grateful to LizzieForKerry for her efforts to get this clarified, and apologize to her and to the many others that joined the original thread of inquiry.

I am embarrased by this error - maybe I should listen to my wife who says I've been looking at too many numbers lately.

Dear HG,

Thank you for the courage and honesty to mention where your numbers were wrong so that the rest of us can continue to count on you for all of the other great work you have done. I only wish that the Bush Administration had the principles and guts you have shown to admit a mistake, figure out a way to correct it, and move on.

Thanks again for all you have done and are doing. Together, we can help the people of Ohio so that every vote counts and every vote is counted!

Thank you for your comments. Election integrity is something we all have to be concerned with, and if my frozen-face takes some egg in the process, so be it.

I'm still immensely curious about the part in Recount Observer B's report which states
"Four precincts were selected, with 3602 total votes, more than the required 3%. (3.8%)"

That the incorrect figure was used and then emphasized as being '...more than the required 3%. (3.8%)" leads me to wonder if this was just an error, or if the 3602 and 3.8% figures had been provided by the Board, or the attention of the observers had been drawn to these figures, by someone on the board. While I could understand an observer making such an error, I'd be more sceptical of someone on the Board making the claim that what they're doing exceeds the minimum requirement.
